Westkirk Library

It’s surprising where motorcycles can take you – a chance encounter on one of the many rides into the Scottish Borders has led to a talk on the Golf in the Wild books at the remarkable Westkirk library:  The Westerkirk Library was founded in 1793 by miners in Jamestown, Scotland, who pooled funds to purchase books for their improvement, and it is the oldest still-operating library in Scotland. The library was initially supported by the Westerhall Mining Company, received a bequest from civil engineer Thomas Telford, and moved to its current location in Bentpath in 1840.  The following is their promotional email to members:

Dear all,
We are delighted to be welcoming Robin Down to the Library. He is going to share his experience and historical knowledge of so many of the golf courses he has played and visited. But in many ways this will be the story of his grandfather.
We are delighted to have both of these books in the library. So if you are a resident of DG13 and a member of the library then you are more than welcome to borrow them. If you are not a resident of DG13, you’re very welcome to come and read them in this delightful space.

All are welcome. Please email to reserve a seat.

We look forward to seeing you in October.
Kind regards,
Jacqueline (westerkirkparishlibrary@gmail.com)
